Growing up, I always felt like my winter break birthday was a little less special compared to the classroom parties my friends got. Now that my son feels the same way about his summertime birthday, I’m determined to make his August celebration fun—without overdoing it.
It’s easier said than done, I know. But as an adult, I’ve realized that so much of how we experience things depends on our perspectives. Sure, summer birthdays might mean missing out on the classroom festivities. However, with a bit of planning and creativity, we can still make their birthdays an unforgettable celebration they look forward to every year.
Here are some ideas:
Ice cream social - Transform your backyard into an ice cream parlor! Set up a DIY sundae bar with several ice cream flavors, sprinkles, sauces, candy toppings, and fresh fruit. Don’t forget the whipped cream and cherries on top!
Nighttime party - Take advantage of those long summer nights with a party under the stars. A nighttime party is a unique twist that can feel magical with twinkling lights and lanterns. Lay blankets on the lawn and rent or borrow a projector screen for an outdoor movie night. Don’t forget the popcorn and snacks!
Night games, anyone? Glow-in-the-dark games are a perfect activity for older kids and teens. Gather glow sticks, necklaces, and bracelets, organize fun outdoor activities like glow-tag, capture the flag, or even plan a scavenger hunt.
Pitch tents in your backyard for a sleepover under the stars. Kids can tell scary stories with their own flashlights and make s’mores by the fire.
Birthday at the beach - Invite guests to meet you for a day filled with fun in the sun. Pack a cooler with refreshing drinks and snacks, and bring beach balls, frisbees, and water toys for endless entertainment. See who can build the most impressive structure with a sandcastle-making contest. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen or a beach umbrella for shade.
Outdoor art party - Party guests can unleash their creativity with an art party—the messier, the better! Think canvases, splatter paint, silly string, spray-and-roll sidewalk chalk, and tie-dye kits. The best part? Everyone gets to take home their masterpieces as a memento of the day.
Summer Olympics party - Whether it’s an Olympic year or not, who doesn’t love a little friendly competition? Set up a series of backyard games inspired by the Summer Olympics: water balloon toss, hula hoop contests, obstacle course, relay races, and more. You can even DIY medals for the winners!
