Can Your Family Survive a Weekend Digital Detox?

Do you constantly check your phone or feel consumed by notifications? Are arguments about screen time becoming all too common in your household? If so, a digital detox might be the perfect reset for your family.

We know it can be hard to imagine life without your device, and it may initially feel a little uncomfortable. Still, a break can offer some really excellent benefits: better sleep, less stress, more connection, and even improved mental health. Plus, you might be surprised by how much you rely on your devices—and for what reasons.

Jumping into a device-free weekend without a plan sets you up for fighting and frustration. Choose a time that makes sense for your family and get everyone to commit so they can start preparing. Before you completely unplug, consider a few things:

What are the “rules?” Setting clear boundaries will help you avoid confusion and get everyone on the same page. What devices are off-limits? Are there exceptions? Will you allow devices for music or specific activities? And how long will the detox last? A weekend, a day, or a few hours each day?

What will you do instead? We recommend making a list of device-free activities everyone will enjoy—and it might be easier than you think.

  • Take a family field trip to a museum or local attraction

  • Go for a walk, bike, or scooter ride, or hike at a state park

  • Have a picnic. Bring a football or paper for drawing

  • Build a fort and get the whole family involved

  • Play charades, pictionary, or a board game

  • Explore a new neighborhood

  • Start a family book club or read one together

To help pass the time, check out our podcasts. Rediscover the magic of story time through music on Musicland Stories or listen to Girl Tales to hear your favorite fairytales transformed into new, exciting adventures.

A full weekend detox may not work for every family, so start small if that feels too daunting. Try a device-free day or even a few hours to start.

Remember, “ditch your device” doesn’t mean you should go completely off the grid unless you want to! Try taking a break or setting limits on screen time to reconnect with each other and everything happening around you.

Last but not least, keep an open mind! It’s natural for kids—and adults—to feel a bit bored without our phones. Our devices have become a go-to source for information and entertainment. But with some planning and creativity, your family can have fun, screen-free experiences that hopefully leave everyone feeling refreshed and reconnected.
