The pumpkin spice trend is back, and stores are practically begging you to buy all the fall decor. But hey, who can blame them? Fall is basically nature’s reminder to get cozy—and I’m not mad about it one bit. Between the crisp sweater-weather air and all those colorful leaves, it’s the perfect season to create some unforgettable moments with your kids.
Why make a bucket list?
In our busy lives, another list might seem like a hassle. But trust me, it’s actually a fun and easy way to plan some intentional family time. The planning and anticipation get everyone excited, and the shared experiences create lasting memories and maybe even some new family traditions.
Plan a fall family outing. Apple orchards and pumpkin patches are fall classics for a reason! Picking apples or pumpkins is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and grab ingredients for delicious treats like a yummy apple pie, roasted pumpkin seeds, or homemade caramel apples. Plus, many farms host sweater-weather activities like hayrides, corn mazes, or petting zoos. Don’t forget to snap some photos while you’re there!
Take a nature walk or a hike. Fall colors are definitely something to appreciate, especially if you get to experience all four seasons like we do in Minnesota. Take a stroll through your neighborhood or hike through the woods to get some fresh air. Even a short walk can be refreshing and a great opportunity to connect with nature for some physical and mental health benefits.
Host a bonfire night. Throw on your favorite cozy sweatshirt and gather friends and family around the bonfire. Roast marshmallows, make s’mores, or just chat and enjoy each others’ company.
Volunteer together. Fall is the perfect time to come together as a family and give back to your community. Volunteering at a local food bank, shelter, or community event is not only a rewarding way to make a difference, but it’s also a great bonding experience. Working together to help others can be an eye-opening experience that shows your kids how fortunate they are while allowing them to contribute to something meaningful.
Decorate your home. Bring the fall vibes indoors with pumpkins, gourds, colorful leaves, and all the autumn decor. Get crafty with DIY leaf garlands, beaded corn cobs, and fall bean mosaics.
Explore local events. Check out the fall festivals, harvest events, and other fun fall activities in your area. List events on your family calendar so you don’t forget them, and maybe some will become yearly traditions!
Plan ahead. Some activities get super crowded on weekends so weekdays might be a better option for your family. And don’t let unpredictable fall weather ruin your fun. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust to changing temps. Pack a cozy sweater or jacket for outdoor activities, bring blankets to bonfires, and don’t forget warm socks for evening events.
