It’s summertime! School’s out, the temps are blazing, and our kiddos get a much-needed break from the daily grind of school routines. What better way to celebrate the sunshine and long days than by starting a few new family traditions?

Shared experiences we have with our children become the cherished stories they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. The excitement and anticipation of a tradition spark positive emotions. At the same time, the experience itself builds connections and creates memories your kids will look forward to year after year.

Family traditions bring a sense of togetherness and belonging, all of which positively impact kids’ development. Research confirms that children raised in households with strong family traditions often experience greater emotional well-being, higher self-esteem, and stronger bonds with their parents. Traditions provide a sense of security and stability in what can often feel like an unpredictable world.

Think back to your own childhood. What special traditions did your family have? Did the smell of homemade popcorn fill the air on movie nights? Did you take an annual road trip to visit extended family? Or maybe you toasted marshmallows over a crackling bonfire. Whatever your fondest memories may be, they likely give you a warm sense of nostalgia and comfort.

Many parents long to recreate those special moments for their children and start ones unique to their own families. If you're looking for inspiration to start some new traditions this summer, check out these ideas:

Create a summer bucket list. Brainstorm a list of activities for your family to do together. Each family member can add something to the list. Your list might include backyard camping under the stars, taking a day trip to the beach, or planning an outdoor board game night next to the fire.

Use your imagination on creative projects. Is there a project your family hasn’t had the time to finish? Get it done together this summer and celebrate the finished product. Or start a new project like building a giant cardboard box fort, tie-dyeing t-shirts, or using sidewalk chalk to create a family mural.

Attend outdoor community events. In our city, summertime means outdoor concerts, farmer’s markets, and craft fairs. There is always something going on. Check social media or your local community calendar for fun family events happening in your area.

Plant a garden together. You don’t need a green thumb to start growing a garden. Plant some pretty flowers or your favorite veggies in your yard, or use a pot if you have less space.

Head to the beach or plan a family camping trip. Many people await summer’s warm weather to spend some much-needed time outside. Whether that’s at your local beach or campground, you’re bound to make new memories. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Remember, we can’t force traditions, we can only create the space for our family’s shared experiences to become meaningful over time. Make it your summer mission to start at least one new family tradition and have fun with it. Let us know what you come up with!
