Summertime can get HOT! And if you’re not careful, too much time in the sun can quickly turn your family fun into an overheated, overstimulated mess. Here are five fun and refreshing ways to stay cool and keep your kiddos entertained all season long:
Plan refreshing water activities. When your kids are bored, restless, or you just need to find something for them to do, use the “just add water” rule. Turn on the sprinkler, buy a slip ‘n slide, or make your own from large pieces of plastic sheeting.
Play your favorite games but with a water twist. Use water balloons, sponges, or buckets of water to play tag, toss, or have silly races. You could even try water balloon dodgeball! Don’t forget to remind your kiddos about all that clean-up waiting for them at the finish line.
Host a frozen t-shirt race: Prep your frozen shirts by wetting, wringing, and freezing them in a sealed plastic bag. On race day, the first person to put on their t-shirt wins!
Frozen fun with ice: My son loves discovering hidden treasures in ice from frozen water balloons. To try this at your house, place a small toy inside the uninflated balloon, then fill with water. Pop it in the freezer on a tray or in a bowl—use a larger bowl for multiple balloons to prevent them from rolling around. Once frozen, rip off the balloon material and let your kids explore different ways to free the toy from the ice: melting with warm water or using their body heat to speed up the process. If your kid is like mine, they’ll get instant gratification from smashing the ice on the driveway!
Make hydrating fun. Drinking enough water is crucial for kids and adults, especially if you’re spending time in the blazing sun. Dehydration is super dangerous and can lead to fatigue, headaches, and even heatstroke.
But plain ol’ water? Booorrrinnggg! Give your water a boost with some flavor, fruit infusion, or ice cubes with berries or mint frozen inside. Avoid sodas and sports drinks that contain too much added sugar. These drinks can dehydrate you, making you feel even worse.
Try a family water challenge. Track your intake using markers and paper. Plan a celebration when your family reaches the goal. Just remember, too much water can also be dangerous. Moderation is key!
Cool off with frozen treats. Make your own popsicles or icy slushies, use your favorite fruits to make frozen kebabs, freeze yogurt tubes or ice cubes with fruit inside, or treat yourselves to some ice cream to celebrate a summer day well spent.
Create a “chill out” zone. Summer can quickly become busy and, for some kids, super stressful. Find a shaded area in your yard or a quiet spot in your house to create a calming atmosphere. Add comfy chairs, a portable fan, snacks, or build an indoor fort with blankets and pillows.
My kiddo loves to relax—and he definitely got that from me! We made him a “calming box” filled with fidgets, small toys, and easy activities for when he needs some time to himself.
Find cool spots in your community. Steal some A/C while you visit community spaces like your local library, nature center, and kid-friendly museums. Meet friends at the local pool or splash pad, or find a shady spot in the park for a picnic.
