Memorial Day Weekend 2024 has arrived, which for the whole country means the kick-off to summer and for some select folks means a day off of school or work. But don’t stress yourself out thinking of how to entertain the kids over the long weekend if your plans don’t involve a quick family getaway. There’s plenty of fun screen-free activities to do that’ll keep your kids busy, and maybe even help them understand that it’s our U.S. troops and veterans who we’re commemorating on Memorial Day.
Here are 8 ideas for kids of all interests that’ll get their red, white, and blue juices flowing:
For the kid who’s crafty and creative….consider doing some red, white, and blue crafts, from door decor to tote bags to felt or dried flowers.
For the kid who’s outdoorsy….visit a National Park. There are hundreds of parks across the country that have plenty to offer, including hiking trails, historic monuments and war memorials. Check out the U.S. directory of National Parks to get started.
For the kid who likes writing…. write letters and cards to troops serving our country. Nonprofits such as Support Our Troops and Any Soldier make it easy.
For the kid who’s an artist in the making…print out Memorial Day-themed coloring pages and let their imagination run wild. Crayola has free downloadable coloring pages that pay homage to the holiday, from buglers to burgers.
For the kid who likes to give back…assemble care packages for our men and women overseas. Let your son or daughter choose a few items they think the soldiers would like, or you can send packages through an organization such as Operation We Are Here, Operation Shoebox, Operation Gratitude, Hero Box and Any Soldier who can share what the troops are really in need of.
For the kid who’s an aspiring chef…whip up some tasty patriotic desserts for your MDW barbecue. Many of these include strawberries and blueberries as main ingredients, so they’re healthy(ish) too!
For the kid who’s an avid reader…tell the story of our country through books. Depending on your child’s age and reading level, there’s an American-themed board book, picture book, or chapter book for everyone. There’s even a wide selection of books for kids who have a deployed parent.
For the kid who loves a good time…visit a Memorial Day Parade in your area. These parades are typically extra festive, with American-themed floats and music, as well as nods to local businesses. Check your town’s website to see if they’re hosting a MDW parade; otherwise, your state’s website may have a list of events that are free to attend.
