We all want our kids to be successful at school, right? And a big part of that is ensuring you and their teacher are on the same page. A solid parent-teacher relationship helps catch any issues early on and ensures your kiddo feels supported at school and at home.
Studies show that parental involvement at school means they’ll have fewer problem behaviors and better social skills. Want to get involved but not sure how? Here are five tips for keeping those communication lines open.
1. Find the best way to connect
Every school has a preferred communication method for parents, teachers, and the school office. If you’re not sure about your child’s school, just ask! My son’s school uses an app called Talking Points, and it’s super easy! It’s just like texting but for school-related stuff.
Your child’s teacher may prefer email, using an app, phone calls, or maybe stopping by for in-person meetings. Familiarize yourself with how your child’s school does things, and try your best to follow those channels.
2. Have realistic expectations
We all want to hear how well our children are doing, but kids are kids! They’re going to mess up sometimes and maybe even get in trouble. If your child’s teacher lets you know there’s an issue, try not to worry. Keep an open mind, and work together to figure out how to help your little one learn from their mistakes so they can do better next time.
3. Keep it brief and focused
Teachers are juggling a million things at once, so keep your comments and questions to the point. If you’ve got a bunch of questions or prefer to have a deeper conversation, it’s best to ask for a quick meeting after school.
4. Help out where you can
Teachers appreciate any support they can get. Ask if you can help out. Do they need volunteers in the classroom, for school events, or on field trips? Maybe they could use a few more boxes of tissues for all those runny noses. Offering to help shows you care and that you’re in this together.
5. Show your appreciation
Remember that teacher who made a difference in your life? Your child’s teacher is doing the same for them. A simple thank you note, a small gift, or even a kind email can brighten their day. Plus, it teaches your kiddo how important it is to show appreciation to others.
Bonus tip for your neurodivergent kids: Open communication is vital if your child has unique learning needs. Share all those awesome things about your child, and tell their teacher any tips or tricks to help them learn best. If you’re unsure where to start, discuss how you can work together to help your child reach their full potential and shine.
