5 Summer 2024 Reads For the Whole Family

You asked, we listened—Starglow Weekly readers requested that we highlight a few books to read this summer in our newsletter, and here we are obliging. There are a ton of new books out there and ultimately, what you choose will depend on your genre of choice and/or your kid’s reading level. But for now, here’s our one book suggestion for each family member to indulge in this summer—all released in 2024‚whether it’s a beach read for you or your partner or it goes toward summer reading points for your kid. Read on!

Summer read for mom:

Emily Oster’s new screen time report was just the tip of the iceberg—the parenting expert has a brand-new book out, co-written by a maternal fetal medicine doctor, called The Unexpected: Navigating Pregnancy During and After Complications. Nope, it’s not a novel, but it’s being touted as a great read even if you’re past the pregnancy stage of parenthood. It teaches readers how to advocate for themselves as patients and understand just how much is involved in bringing new life into this world.

Summer read for dad:

No Road Home by John Fram is a highly-anticipated gothic tale about a single father who must protect his queer son at all costs—especially once he becomes a person-of-interest in his rich father-in-law’s murder. It’s a good read for the dad who loves a little escapism and a deep father/son relationship.

Summer read for young adults (teens and tweens):

Everyone loves a good The Holiday-esque story where two main characters temporarily trade lives, and author Melody Carlson does it with aplomb in her new YA novel, Just for the Summer. Two best friends—one working a summer job in rural Idaho, another managing a chic urban hotel—trade lives for the summer—and, you guessed it, trade crushes too.

Summer read for an elementary schooler:

If your son or daughter is into graphic novels, they might just get hooked on this new book series called Monkey King and the World of Myths: The Monster Maze by Maple Lam. Monkey King has made a deal with the gods that all  his wishes will be granted, as long as he single-handedly combats monsters and tries to save the world. Bonus: Much of the book is set in Greece, so don’t be surprised if your kid randomly starts referencing Greek mythology while reading.

Summer read for a preschooler:

Your preschooler most likely isn’t an independent reader yet, but they’ll undoubtedly enjoy it as you read aloud The Truth About The Couch by Adam Rubin, the author of Dragons Love Tacos. Parents too will get a kick out of this LOL-worthy tale about how couches aren’t just for sitting and sleeping, but that they also need a steady feeding of coins, remote controls, and crumbs to survive.
