Summer break is perfect for meaningful family conversations—use our starters to get your kids talking! These questions are meant to spark engaging chats with your kids and get answers beyond a simple yes/no or good/bad. Ditch the “how was your day?” go-to and be ready to talk with an open mind.
BONUS TIP: Write down these questions and answers and see how your kids’ answers change as they age. Or ask your child if you can record the conversation to rewatch it years later.
“Tell me about the best part of your day.” Routine dinnertime conversations can get stale. Liven them up with specific questions about your child’s day, and be ready to share yours. Use your answers to model the importance of appreciating the little things, like how tasty your lunch was or when someone complimented you and made you feel good about yourself.
“What’s one thing you’re proud of and why?” Pay attention to what your child says and praise them for their answers—big or small. Sharing their proud moments can help build their self-esteem and confidence. Don’t forget to share one thing you’re proud of too.
“If you could have a superpower for one day, what would it be and why?” Get your child’s imagination flowing with this silly question. I’m still undecided about whether flying or being invisible would be my choice. I’ll have to get back to you…
“What are some of your favorite memories with me?” Get your tissues ready for this answer—I’m getting emotional just thinking about what my son would say. Let your child know what your favorite memory with them is, too. Maybe you’ll have the same ones!
“Tell me about your ideal day. What would you do? Who is there? What would you eat?” Kids have packed schedules, so it’s easy to lose touch with what truly makes them happy. This question is a fun peek into who they are without practices, appointments, or expectations. Their answers might surprise you!
